Japan Bringing Its Mobile Tech Overseas, Including Wallet Phone

Japan has entered an aggressive push to market its advanced mobile technology and handsets abroad. The Japanese government together with a group of mobile industry carriers and manufacturers created the initiative as an approach to help Japan catch up in global mobile-marketplace.

One of the primary wireless innovations Japan wants to see on a global scale is its popular “Wallet Phone” that has been available in Japan since 2004. The technology uses a small chip developed by Sony that’s embedded in mobile devices. The chip, called FeliCa, then  communicates with a reader-device in stores.
